Glimepiride, which acts on insulin-secreting cells called beta cells inside the pancreas, activates calcium channels on cells, allowing insulin to pass out of the cell. Amaryl belongs to a class of antidiabetics known as (sulfonylureas) used to lower raised blood sugar levels in Type 2 diabetes mellitus. This insulin causes each cell in the body to take in and use glucose, lowering blood glucose levels.
